IREX COURSE

A pass in the IREX exam is a great way to get you that competitive edge on your C.V.

The Instrument Rating Examination (IREX) is a CASA open book, three and one half hour cyber examination which consisting of 40 questions. The pass mark is 70%. (28 correct answers).

The IREX is a computer based examination based on the operation of a twin engine aeroplane. Thus our course is suitable for both aeroplane and helicopter pilots.

As the helicopter commercial licence course does not include night and instrument training and is about one third less than the length of the aeroplane equivalent, the helicopter pilot is at a disadvantage when attempting the IREX. Our course has an extra week of tuition to allow for this shortcoming. This brings a RW pilot to the FW entry standard.

A pass in the IREX examination is necessary before you commence practical IR flight training. It is recommended all IREX graduates continue onto the flight line for CIR training, while the IREX study material is still current and familiar. This will make your flying phase much easier and ensures you finish within the scheduled hours – this may save you repeating sorties.

More information - why do IREX? In order to obtain a Command Instrument Rating you have to pass the IREX. Due to the fact that aeroplanes and helicopters operate the same way under IFR rules; it does not matter if you are flying RW or FW aircraft. The IREX is based on a twin engine aeroplane flying in all weather conditions by day or night.

Why is it a difficult examination? Many think it must be easy, being an open book examination. But it is really a speed test, in which you have to get past a very devious CASA exam writer who obliviously wants to test your knowledge on how the IFR world works and get you to solve a complex problem using difficult to understand references.
